How to draw a straight line

Thanks to Jim McBride for pointing me to this archive, and in particular this delightful paper by Sir Alfred Kempe. Next time I am telling a combinatorics class about Kempe’s 1879 proof of the 4-color theorem, I will have to mention this article. I wasn’t aware that he was also well known for his work on linkages.
